Andy Goldsworthy, by using nature as his medium, acknowledges that some, if not most of his pieces are not permanent. He does not see this as destruction though but rather a type of giving to nature or that his pieces are just being transported to another type of world. Andy actually goes to the brink right before the destruction of his pieces, pushing it as far as possible. The balance he creates can be tenuous but like the seed shaped pieces made of stone tend to remain standing. He sees said stone seeds as ‘guardians’ of the areas he left them in. In creating them, he learns something about the place he is in while trying to understand the stone. Andy is inspired by the sea or the river. Not exactly because they are made of water but because of the flow it creates from nature.
